Bacteria behind lethal vine disease found on French soil

Bacteria known to cause Pierce's Disease that has blighted California vineyards for years has been found in France for the first time. How Pierce's Disease affects wine grapes and vines. The Xylella fastidiosa bacteria has been exposed on the island of Corsica, just over 18 months after its first recorded advent in Europe, in olive groves in Italy.
News of its spread to Corsica prompted a fierce reaction from Europe’s plant protection organisation (EPPO), which said this week that ‘eradication measures have been immediately implemented’.
It is a potentially worrying development for wine producers – and wine drinkers.
Xylella fastidiosa is the source of Pierce’s Disease, a lethal vine disease that has caused serious hurt in California’s vineyards, where it costs $104m annually. European Union officials said the bacteria ‘represents a major risk to EU territory’.
But, French government vine expert Jacques Grosman told the website that there was currently ‘a low risk of contamination in France’. Read more

Champagne 2015 crop enters ‘crucial’ periodThe next six weeks will be ‘crucial’ to the quality and quantity of this year’s Champagne harvest, after drought conditions left vines small of water. Louis Roederer vines in ChampagneChampagne grape growers will be allowed to pick 10,000kg of grapes per hectare of vines in this year’s wine harvest, with another 500kg/ha to be released from reserve stocks – the same figure as in 2014. The 2015 harvest is liable to start on or around 10 September.
Champagne’s governing body, the Comité Champagne, said the vineyards had loved a ‘distress-free’ start to their growing cycle this year. But it added, ‘The drought that has set in since late May has left the vines small of water and this, in addition to the heatwaves in June and July, has slowed vine progression.
‘Now, more than ever, weather conditions over the appearance weeks will be crucial for the grape harvest’s number and quality.’ Read more

Jefford on Monday: The two million bottle bet – and beyondThis may be the cleverest cut of vineyard sourcing I’ve ever come across, and it led to the creation of one of France’s most enduringly successful Vin de Pays (now IGP) wines. Chardonnay vines in Ardeche owned by Louis Latour.I never met the man responsible for it, Denis Fetzmann, and in 2013 he retired from his long-held post in payment of the domaine holdings of Louis Latour. I recently visited its birthplace, though, and exposed that there’s a new chapter recounting, of which more before long.
The tale started in the 1970s; the sixth Louis Latour, frustrated at Burgundy’s inconsistency, questioned Fetzmann to try to find a Mâcon-like Chardonnay everyplace in the south of France. It must have been tempting for the young man to head straight for the open, bargain-priced prairies of Hérault and Aude. Fetzmann, though, chose to go … not too far. Just to Alba-la-Romaine, across the Rhône from Montélimar in the southern Ardèche, even though the vineyards were subdue full of hybrids back then, and few growers had decent Chardonnay to sell. What did he sniff out there?
This is the southern end of the same département where you’ll find St Joseph, Cornas and St Péray. It’s karst country, gorge-incised, colorless with limestone, set well back from the Rhône itself; warm by latitude, fresh by altitude. As importantly, Fetzmann found a dependable partner for this ambitious project in the local Vignerons Ardéchois co-operative group (UVICA).
The result worked magnificently well, though Latour’s fellow négociants had deep misgivings about the association of a Burgundy mark with southern French Chardonnay (which was why Latour felt it had to make a special bottle for this wine). There are two versions, succinctly contrastive: the Ardèche Chardonnay, a near-perfect basic varietal; and the Grand Ardèche, a barrel-fermented parcel selection, using around 25 per cent new wood. I’ve long been a fan of both wines, particularly the latter (which can sew havoc in blind tastings of serious colorless burgundy) and it remains on fine form – see the tasting notes at the end of this blog.
The secrets? It’s machine-harvested – but into small boxes using specially adapted apparatus, for less brutal fruit handling. Gravity-pressed without débourbage, “for a bit more stout and fruitfulness,” according to the Latour Ardèche technical director Alain Berthon. Lots of wild yeast; a warmer rather than cooler fermentation; full malolactic fermentation; and up to 10 months without racking. Initially the butt was 13.5%, but now Latour is looking for 13% and something a small more ‘nervous’. (Just a small but no more: the TA remains below 5 g/l as tartaric, with a pH of 3.5 – all very drinkable). But the real secret, of course, is that this part of Ardèche can grow truly impressive Chardonnay, as the percipient Fetzmann calculated. Louis Latour sells around two million bottles of its Ardèche Chardonnay wines each year.
That, though, is not all. At the same time as visiting Latour, I had a chance to see what else the Vignerons Ardéchois and their independent IGP colleagues were up to.
Those besotted with ‘modest varieties’ will know IGP Ardèche as the place to go looking for reds made from Chatus, an ancient indigenous vine here (notably mentioned by Olivier de Serres, the father of French agronomy, who lived locally). This part of the Ardèche doesn’t strike me as red-wine country (many are grassy, herbaceous and bitter-edged), but Chatus is probably the most fascinating – while set alight, it can have aromatic complexity and a seriousness of flavour hard to find in Merlot, Syrah or even Gamay here. I’m sure we’ll see better in the future.
The Vignerons Ardéchois have had huge success with rosé wines, to their own surprise (and to mine): it’s the largest selling category for this giant cooperative group (which produced the equivalent of 57 million bottles in 2014). But hey, everyone wants to drink rosé nowadays, and these deeper-than-Provence versions are competently made and attractively priced.
It was when I started tasting the Viogniers, though, that the inscription started to glide. The Vignerons Ardéchois have one called Terre d’Eglantier, and the 2014 version is deft, graceful, haunting and moreish: a hard achievement with this sometimes clumsy grape. There are, too, outstanding versions from a number of additional producers, notably the startlingly excellent 2014 Trias Cevenol Viognier from the Lablachère cooperative (jasmine and citrus-blossom aromas with a saline edge); the 2013 Cuvée Viognier from Domaine du Grangeon (poised, textured and elegant); and the impressively dense and succulent 2013 Que Sa Quo from Benoît Salel and Elise Renaud. In draw a distinction to its peers, this final wine is grown a small further north on granite (not limestone) and stake-trained; Benoît Salel formerly worked with Pierre Gaillard.
Louis Latour, too, produces its own Ardèche Viognier (the 2014 is another bullseye varietal) as well as a version called Duo in which Viognier is co-fermented with Chardonnay (the 2014 is a pleasant wine though I don’t see the point of this blend when the varietal wines themselves are so gastronomically apt).

There are some promising late-harvest Viogniers here too, including the floral and apricotty 2014 Cuvée Mathilde from Domaine Vigier, with aperitif-style sweetness: a marvel at below 10 euros. Chardonnay over-performs in southern Ardèche – but Viognier may eventually prove subdue more successful (the local Viognier grape fee, much, has now overtaken that for Chardonnay); it can’t be long previous to there’s some serious Northern Rhône Viognier investment. If Viognier like this came from aspiring New World locations, it would be winning medals by the armful. Why not an appellation for Viognier and Chardonnay here, too?

Home gadget Ullo claims to remove sulphites in wine

A chemistry graduate who claims his new gadget can filter out sulphites in wine as it is poured is seeking $100,000 on crowdfunding site Kickstarter. Ullo claims to remove sulphites in wine, but do you believe it? And if so, is it necessary?The device, named Ullo and pronounced ‘oo-lo’, is described by developer James Kornacki on Kickstarter as a ‘revolutionary refining’ product.
According to Ullo’s Kickstarter page, a wine drinker can place the gadget on top of their wine glass. A filter made from food grade polymer then removes sulphites in wine as it is poured – returning the wine to its ‘natural state’, according to the companionship.
Sulphites are widely present in wines and many winemakers contend that – even in small amounts – they are essential in helping to prevent oxidisation and preserving freshness in wine. Read more

Mumm kicks off earliest Napa wine harvest for years

It is barely the last week of July and the first grapes of the 2015 Napa wine harvest have already been picked by Mumm in the province. Pinot Noir grapes roll in to Mumm Napa Valley's Game Farm winery marking the start of the 2015 wine harvest. Only 12 tonnes of Pinot Noir grapes for sparkling wine were picked by Mumm Napa on 22 July, but that was enough to ensure the 2015 Napa wine harvest goes down as one of the earliest for several years.
Mumm Napa, a subsidiary of French wine and spirits group Pernod Ricard, often takes pride in firing the proverbial starting gun in Napa. Its winemaker, Ludovic Dervin, sabres a bottle of sparkling wine to mark the beginning of the harvest.

‘We sprinkle it on the grapes in the first press load,’ he was quoted as saying on the Napa Valley Vintners trade body website. ‘It celebrates the end of a cycle in the vineyard.’
Although the bulk of the Napa harvest is subdue believed to be some way off, the 2015 start date for sparkling is the earliest for at least seven years.
The Napa 2014 wine harvest was also early, beginning on 30 July. Grapes for sparkling wines are always the first to be picked.
Many vineyards were subdue in the latter stages of ripening, as several producers tweeted this week, including Joseph Phelps Vineyards and Duckhorn Vineyards.
The harvest for colorless grapes, beginning with Sauvignon Blanc, is set to start more broadly in early August, said Napa Valley Vintners. Read more
